Practical International Data Management - Street Address

Definition

A delivery/postal address which is based on geographical location.

Considerations and idiosyncrasies

• One or more parts of an address may be written in different languages or in more than one language.

   
   A thoroughfare name place in both Italian and Catalan, Alghero, Sardinia, Italy

• It is possible to have a physical address which is not a street address, or which can move location - for example, a house boat or trailer.

• A single premise/delivery point may have more than one address:

   
   A building with two addresses, Stralsund, Germany

• A premise/delivery point may not be on the thoroughfare of its address:

   
   Stralsund, Germany

• An address can contain more than one street name. Examples:

   6 Elm Avenue
   Runcorn Road
   BIRMINGHAM
   B12 8QX
   UNITED KINGDOM

• A thoroughfare name may consist entirely of strings normally used as thoroughfare types. Examples:

 Avenue Road, Great Malvern, Worcestershire, United Kingdom.

• A street address may not contain a thoroughfare name but be directed to a building, large-user or district. Examples:

   Oakland
   Fairseat
   SEVENOAKS
   TN15 7LT
   UNITED KINGDOM

   Electoral Reform Society Ltd
   LONDON
   N1 1RS
   UNITED KINGDOM

• A full address may contain a large number of characters and lines. For example:

   Department For Environment Food & Rural Affairs (D.E.F.R.A.)
   State Veterinary Service
   Animal Health Office
   Hadrian House
   Wavell Drive
   Rosehill Industrial Estate
   CARLISLE
   CA1 2TB
   UNITED KINGDOM

   The Gynaecology Cancer Research Unit
   Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology
   St. Bartholomews & The Royal School of Medicine & Dentistry
